Just A Tiny Glimpse of Fredericksburg! As the Sign Says, Willkommen!

In search of a nearby day trip for my husband and me yesterday, I came across a Facebook post by one of my friends in Fredericksburg, Texas. Let me first define my idea of a day trip to mean within two hours of my home. After all, we are in Texas. What was supposed to be a trip to a car show and a wildflower farm turned into something very different. While we did make it to the show and drove by the farm, today I share the discoveries we made on this particular part of our journey. I’ll entertain you with other tales from the day at a later date.

Driving a few miles outside of Fredericksburg, we saw a number of cars slowing down to turn onto a dirt road. As we got closer, we noticed the Fredericksburg Trade Days sign we’d observed several times before. However, we’d never been in the area during Trade Days, the one-weekend per month event, so we chose to turn in and see what was going on down this well-traveled road. Less than a quarter mile away, discoveries were made, some much more interesting than others.

The above collage includes the most interesting finds from our trip. I must admit I was a bit creeped out by the doll’s heads, but like a bad wreck, I just couldn’t look away. I had to share this bizarre assortment in case your home is missing the heads of dolls long torn off by excited children or teething puppies. I assure you the varieties are endless. In addition to doll’s heads, other torso enhancers are available including fake Easter Island heads, bull skulls and much more.

As you can see, another man’s trash is indeed another man’s treasure. Junk or fine antiques? You be the judge. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! For more information on Fredericksburg Trade Days, visit http://www.fbgtradedays.com.

20130519-095923.jpgLocated in Fredericksburg’s bustling downtown, Der Lindenbaum offers a taste of German cuisine. Since we weren’t all that familiar with the food of those who first arrived in Fredericksburg in the mid-1800’s, we decided to experience it for ourselves. Aside from watching the occasional Food Network show or trying the sausage and kraut experience at a fair, we looked to our waiter for suggestions. The menu options included Schweinebraten, Sauerbraten, Königsberger and a variety of Schnitzels, pork cutlets breaded and pan fried.

We opted to go with our waiter’s suggestions. I chose the Jäger Schnitzel topped with a mushroom wine sauce along with a side of incredibly flavorful German potato salad and red cabbage. My husband went with the Burgermeister Platte, three varieties of locally-made German sausage served with sauerkraut and the delectable potato salad. Our mothers would have been proud as we wiped the plates clean. I have no idea as to whether the food was truly authentic German cuisine, but I wouldn’t hesitate to return.

I also have it on good authority the Black Forest Cake is excellent as well, but we were too full after our meal to try it. For information on the restaurant, go to http://www.derlindenbaum.com. Please note, Der Lindenbaum doesn’t take Visa or MasterCard so bring another form of payment. We missed the sign on the door with this information, but an ATM is located right down the street so my husband walked there and got cash.

Willkommen to Fredericksburg! There’s so much to choose from in this small community located in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. Interested in learning more about Fredericksburg, visit http://www.visitfredericksburgtx.com.

Until next time. Safe travels!
